Yesterday, as the sun shone brightly, I took full advantage at a gorgeous pub that sits right on the edge of Clapham Common – The Windmill. Not only is the decor and design of this establishment something special, the food was superb and the service fantastic.
We were informed that this is also a hotel and can hold events such as weddings, it is clear to see why. It is such a beautiful building and in a great location. Opting to sit outside for full basking opportunity, a bottle of wine chilling to my left and brilliant company adjacent, I thought it only right a course meal is the way to start this day of sun worshipping.
Immediately impressed with the extensive list of vegan wines, we were suggested to try a bottle of Schweiger, which complemented the meal perfectly. It was the perfect wine for a Monday afternoon in the sun (or any afternoon).
Starting with a Chopped and Charred Salad, with aubergine, courgette and topped generously with dukkah, this was the perfect starter for this Summery day. It was really fresh and tasty and I ate this pretty swiftly, it was a light, yet a satisfactory starter.
For my main I had a Sweet Potato Gratin, this came in a rich sauce with crispy balls of bubble and squeak, charred peppers, some delicious girolles and sunflower seeds. This was more than satiating, with the texture combinations working so well to build layers to this already complete dish. I thoroughly enjoyed this and could eat this again and again.
For dessert, it was, of course, perfect weather for fruit, opting for a Strawberry, pistachio and mint salad, that came with juicy glazed doughnut peaches and a granola crumb, this was the gazpacho of the crumble world if you will. It was absolutely delicious, the fruits were fresh and the flavours worked so well. It was a lovely dessert to conclude a magnificent lunch with great company.
